DHAKA SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
The School of Architecture is the culmination of the search for an architecture that represents the contemporary Identity of the South Asian Subcontinent. The Site for the school is located on an acre of land on Madani Avenue, about two miles east of the US Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The parti of the School evolves from the typology of Buddhist monasteries from the fifth century where the central space is the most sacred. All programs focus on the shared courtyard. Studios, classrooms, student rooms, and activity spaces together shape the central space and are the walls that define this outdoor room. Circumambulation around this central assembly space also evokes the deep structure that has evolved from sacred spaces.
The architecture of the School recognizes the need for private space and distinguishes between the public arena defined by the south wing of the school and the central courtyard that belongs to this evolved monastery. Student rooms above the studio provide a physical connection between the students’ living, thinking, and workspaces. The planning of the school encourages informal interaction among the students. Universal tectonic principles are articulately shaped to provide an expression that expresses the genius loci of this unique place.
